Reforesting and conserving
At Fantasy Farm, protecting living things isn't a one-off campaign. It's the work of every season.
What's already growing
When the association settled at L'Armigère, the meadow was bare. Today more than 400 trees and shrubs have taken root, hedgerows have been restored and wildflowers sown for pollinators. Around twenty swallows' nests shelter nearly two hundred of these migrants each year. The site is a registered LPO wildlife refuge.
Summers are getting hotter and drier, and the land has held. We're carrying on: planting more, holding on to water, creating shade, and choosing species that will cope with tomorrow's climate.
Sometimes, planting nothing
Reforesting isn't only about planting. A few minutes' walk from the farm, an old chestnut wood shelters trees several centuries old, dead but still standing, hollowed and split. There's nothing to add here: this wood is alive precisely because it has been left alone. Bats, hole-nesting birds, insects, roe deer and badgers find there what the open fields around no longer offer them.
Further afield, a meadow on the banks of the Charente could link habitats that are now cut off from one another, and become a corridor for wildlife once again.
Protection for good
An association can change, disappear or sell. That's why every piece of land conserved by Fantasy Farm is placed under an ORE (Obligation Réelle Environnementale) for 99 years: a French legal covenant attached to the land itself, which survives any change of ownership.
In a commune where intensive farming and hunting set the rules, every plot given back to nature counts twice over.
